Big Beach at Makena State Park

bigbeach

Wild and undeveloped with the longest Maui beach on island, the road beyond Makena Resort leads to magnificent Oneloa and its spectacular white sands. More commonly known as Big Beach, it attracts everyone from our Maui vacation rental guests to locals and those seeking adventure. A stay at Makena Surf puts you only minutes away by car from the soft sand, turquoise waters and peaceful ocean views.

There are no Maui condos or hotels at Big Beach which adds to the wilderness experience that you find here. Sand dunes occupy the back shore covered with kiawe trees. A large cinder cone called Pu`u Ola`i separates Big Beach from Little Beach. Maui sunsets from top of this red hill are some of the most spectacular to see on your Maui vacation.

Big Beach earned its nickname from impressive statistics. As the largest of Maui beaches, it has 3,300 feet of sand to walk and stretches 100 feet wide. This vast amount of space offers enough room for everyone to relax under the warm Maui sun.

Hawaii whales often frequent this area from November to March. Depending on ocean conditions, this can be an excellent place for body boarding and swimming. On calm days, Maui snorkeling is popular around the point at Pu`u Ola`i.

Spend a day here unplugged from the rest of the world on the endless sands of Big Beach. Be enchanted by its turquoise waters and gorgeous Maui views looking out to Kaho`olawe. If you have been to Big Beach, we invite your comments with suggestions and tips.

Precautions at Makena Beach: Stay on the shore during High Surf in spring and summer when this beach has dangerous waves and powerful rip currents. Little Beach on the other side of Pu`u Ola`i is more protected but has a tradition of being clothing optional which is not legal on Maui.

Maui travel tips for Makena Beach: Hike to the top of Pu`u Ola`i if you are in good physical condition. Bring hat, sunscreen, food and water.

Nearby Maui Dining: Stop at Makena Grill after Big Beach across from the lava rock wall at Secret Cove or any plate lunch stand.

Facilities: Lifeguards, picnic tables, portable restrooms. No shower facilities.

Directions: Two parking lots on Makena Alanui Road located four miles past the Grand Wailea Resort.
